Marvel rings in the New Year with monsters, new number one issues, a new cosmic war and wait for it….a bizarre mashup meeting of Deadpool and Howard the Duck?
Here are the big highlights in Marvel’s January 2017 previews that have us most excited to light up the fireworks and pop the champagne!
Let’s start with the number ones:
Monsters Unleashed #1 There are new details about this massive event by writer Cullen Bunn and a a team of all-star artists. Now we know Steve McNiven will join Bunn for the first chapter as Avengers, Champions, Guardians, X-Men and Inhumans team up with monstrous new threats. Who are the Leviathons? The teasing outbreak continues!
After hinting at “an end, a beginning with ResurrXion”, Marvel announced Iceman #1 yesterday and now an announcement via Twitter for Weapon X #1.
Weapon X is one of the code-names for the X-Man Wolverine and the name of the infamous military/science unit that transformed Logan into Weapon X by giving him an adamantium skull and claws. Later incarnations of the program produced Deadpool, Maverick, X-23 (Logan’s clone now using the Wolverine code-name and headlining the Wolverine book) and more weaponized mutants.
Fans should note the teaser image shows the history of the Weapon X program and its many victims/products including Logan/Wolverine from the classic Barry Windsor-Smith story, Sauron, X-23, Deadpool and Sabretooth. During the Grant Morrison era, it was revealed Weapon X was part of an overall Weapon Plus program that created Fantomex.
In Death of Wolverine, Logan discovered a new Weapon X program was in operation.
Yes, that’s Batman and Wonder Woman from the classic television series and yes, they will meet up in a new comic book crossover in a case of “because you demanded it!”
The new year brings new books, new heroes, big crossovers and a major villain’s comeback.

The Kamandi Challenge #1
Kamandi, hero of a post-apocalyptic Earth and creation of the legendary Jack Kirby. Announced at ECCC, 14 creative teams will take on the title character on a quest to find his parents and journey to known and unknown parts of the DC Universe. Each chapter ends with a cliffhanger and the next team must resolve it before creating their own. In the first issue, The Last Boy On Earth begins his journey by Dan Abnett, Dan Didio, Dale Eaglesham, Keith Giffen and Scott Koblish with a Bruce Timm cover. Iceman is getting his own solo comic book Marvel revealed via Twitter with a cover showing the X-Man’s 50 year history.
Iceman #1 was announced for Spring 2017 with the previously teased ResurrXion, which appears to be the follow-up event to Inhumans vs. X-Men.
This is the first new title announced with the mysterious ResurrXion banner.
This is the first ongoing title to star original X-Man Bobby Drake.
Two versions of Iceman exist in the Marvel Universe. Both came out of the closet during the Brian Michael Bendis run in which Beast brought the original five X-Men into the present.
Young Bobby from the past was “outed” by psychic Jean Grey. Bobby later confronted his older adult self about his lifetime in the closet. Iceman is now the most prominent LGBT Marvel character.
Young Bobby is currently part of the All-New X-Men and recently sparks flew between him and a young gay Inhuman. Older Drake is part of Storm’s Extraordinary X-Men team. Continue reading ICEMAN Solo Book With RESURRXION

Marvel revealed a new teaser with the X-Men logo as the “X” and the lightning bolts from Black Bolt’s costume in the “O” signalling a third X-Men, Inhumans series.
Death of X #2 arrives this week. This four-part series by Jeff Lemire and Charles Soule reveals the fate of Cyclops in the eight months after Secret Wars in which we learned the Terrigen Mist that create new Inhumans are killing mutants and sets the stage for the Inhumans vs. X-Men event beginning in December.

Two of pop culture’s greatest teams join forces for the first time.
DC Comics and Boom! Studios announced Justice League will meet the Power Rangers in 2017.
The Justice League lineup —Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern John Stewart, the Flash and Cyborg—will meet Saban’s Mighty Morphin Power Rangers in a six-issue monthly miniseries from writer Tom Taylor (Injustice: Gods Among Us) and artist Stephen Byrne.
“DC and BOOM! Studios teaming up on this crossover is a dream come true for fans of Saban’s Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and the Justice League,” said Hank Kanalz, Senior Vice President, Editorial Strategy and Administration, DC Entertainment. “Stories like this are a great way to have that ‘what if’ itch scratched, combining favorite characters from different publishers in epic adventures.”
