Doctor Strange appears to be a huge element of Marvel’s Cinematic Phase Three if you believe all the rumblings on the web! Pulling off the Master of the Mystic Arts could be tricky but who knew Iron Man would have been a blockbuster smash leading to Avengers Assembling on the big screen!

Like Robert Downey, Jr. playing Tony Stark – casting is key! You need an actor with charm, charisma who can make dark magic believable.

Doctor Stephen Strange was a brilliant, rich, arrogant surgeon who injures his hands in a freak accident. When the Doctor can no longer practice medicine he goes on a search for a radical cure to heal his hands taking him to exotic locales. Strange encounters The Ancient One starts in Asia and begins a path to becoming the Sorcerer Supreme of Earth.

Who could play Marvel’s Doctor Strange on the big screen?

Johnny Depp? The obvious choice. His resume is filled with dark heroes and he’s got the box-office mojo to enchant the most skeptical fans into a Strange flick.

Benedict Cumberbatch? The breakout star of Sherlock and Star Trek Into Darkness could play Strange or any one of his classic rivals. The acclaimed actor is playing the lead dragon in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug so perhaps Cumberbatch would be better to play Mephisto?

Josh Holloway? The long shot and maybe an odd choice but lose the accent and remember the brooding, arrogant Sawyer from Lost who hid his painful past with his charming swagger.

Dormannu. Mephisto. There are lots of big, bad variations on the Devil in the Marvel Universe but Dr. Strange must face off with longtime enemy Baron Mordo in his big-screen début.

Strange and Mordo’s rivalry began when Stephen saved the Ancient One from Mordo’s plot to kill and steal the mighty sorcerer’s powers.

Who should play Mordo?

Javier Bardem? The obvious choice! With an impressive roster of villains (No Country for Old Men, Skyfall) Bardem can conjure evil characters in a blink. The Oscar winner could bring the European flavor and menace to the sinister, power-hungry Baron.

No official word yet but I think we can expect the Doctor to be in Avengers 3 after a successful solo film in the near future!

Given Strange’s association with Bruce Banner in various Defenders series over the year – Dr. Strange could meet Dr. Banner in a Hulk movie?
