CAPTAIN MARVEL Trailer Soars

Marvel revealed the first trailer and poster for CAPTAIN MARVEL. Brie Larson plays Carol Danvers in the 90’s set adventure that signals the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, exposes new (?) alien enemies and takes inspiration from one of the greatest Avengers comics epics ever.

This marks the first Marvel film led by a female superhero, features the return of Samuel J. Jackson and Clark Gregg as a younger Nick Fury and Phil Coulson.

What is the Kree Starforce? Who are the Skrulls? How does CAPTAIN MARVEL set up AVENGERS 4 after that final post-credit moments in AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR.

Let’s watch the trailer then break down the biggest moments and burning questions:

Who is Captain Marvel?

In the comics, Carol Danvers is a human Air Force officer exposed to a Kree weapon and her DNA melded with Mar-Vell, giving her cosmic powers. Carol first took the name Ms. Marvel and joined the Avengers. Carol later took the code-names Binary then Warbird. Marvel finally made Carol Captain Marvel. In this film preview, Carol has memories of her past as a pilot but she’s a member of the Kree Starforce. (Mar-Vell was the original Captain Marvel, a Kree warrior who became Carol’s friend, an Avenger and hero of Earth.)

Who are the Kree?

Members of this blue-skinned militaristic alien empire have already appeared in the MCU. Ronan the Accuser and Korath were villains of GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY. Kree scientists experimented on ancient humans to create super soldiers called Inhumans. The descendants of those Inhumans have appeared on AGENTS OF SHIELD and INHUMANS. The Starforce is an elite group of Kree soldiers seen as heroes of the Empire but pitted against the Avengers and rival Empires.

Who are the Skrulls?

These reptilian aliens are shapeshifters who can impersonate other beings. Warskrulls also have powers and abilities of other beings. For example the Super Skrull possessed all the powers of the Fantastic Four team.

The Kree-Skrull War is one of the biggest epics in comics canon. The ancient war between the two races expanded with Earth caught in the crossfire until the Avengers stepped in.

Biggest Moments:

Carol Danvers is the woman who fell to Earth crash landing into a Blockbuster Video store. Carol will meet a young Nick Fury who “ready to hang it up” before meeting the cosmic hero.

In Carol’s flashbacks we see her with fellow pilot Maria “Photon” Rambeau. Lashana Lynch plays Carol’s best friend.

Carol is in the Kree green military uniform and iconic helmet as part of the Starforce under a commander played by Jude Law. Is he playing Mar-Vell? There’s a scene with Carol on an alien world – is this Hala – the throneworld of the Empire?

Carol is trapped in a strange device. Was Carol seized and experimented on by the Kree or will her movie origin be more like comics canon?

Skrulls! My favorite Marvel aliens make their big screen debut landing on a beach. Carol punches a little old lady she likely suspects in one of the shapeshifters.

Pagers are back! Fury uses his 90’s pager with the message “with target” but how does this tie into the final moments of AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR when the older Fury pulls out the old pager in his final act before turning to dust. The image on the pager was the icon worn by Captain Marvel. Is this the same pager?

More burning questions:

Supreme Intelligence – will we see the giant floating head that rules the Kree Empire.

Celestials! These giant ancient aliens have appeared briefly in the MCU. The Celestials are God-like aliens who created the Skrulls and other alien races.

Thanos? Will the Mad God of Titan appear? Thanos and Mar-Vell are bitter enemies in comics.

Photon – Rambeau was actually the first female Captain Marvel but not powered by Kree. Rambeau later took on the code-name Photon as a member of the Ultimates.

The two biggest questions of all:

Where’s Captain Marvel been? Has Carol been in deep space or in a different time and space – which could reveal a multiverse in the MCU?

Skrulls all this time? By introducing the Skrulls in 90’s – Marvel could be setting up some shocking twists in like the Hydra/SHIELD twist of CAPTAIN AMERICA: WINTER SOLDIER? Could one of more of the current or dead Avengers be a Skrull imposter? In comics some Skrull deep cover operatives don’t even know they’re Skrulls?

CAPTAIN MARVEL soars into cinemas March 8, 2019.
