Marvel announced principal photography began on CAPTAIN MARVEL, set for release on March 8, 2019, along with a new photo of Oscar winning star Brie Larson.

Marvel already teased the return of Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and that the film will be set in the 1990’s. More big news is who else is in the cast. Clark Gregg is back on the big screen. Gregg plays S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Phil Coulson who now stars on MARVEL’S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. on ABC.

Today’s announcement revealed Djimon Hounsou and Lee Pace are part of the cast. Hounsou and Pace played Korath and Ronan the Accuser in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY. Ronan was a Kree warlord and Korath his enforcer.

The story will follow Carol Danvers “as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races.” Set in the 1990s, the upcoming film is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The film also stars Ben Mendelsohn, Lashana Lynch, Gemma Chan, Algenis Perez Soto, Rune Temte, McKenna Grace and Jude Law.

The inclusion of Pace and Hounsou mean the galactic war could be this film is based on the classic Avengers epic – The Kree/Skrull war. In the comics, the blue-skinned Kree were in a bitter war with the Skrulls, reptilian aliens with shapeshifting powers. Earth became caught in the crossfire of the warring empires. The Kree have a huge influence on the Marvel Universe including the creation of the Inhumans.

The first Captain Marvel was a Kree soldier named Mar-Vell who became an Avenger. Danvers was an Air Force pilot who gained her power after being exposed to a Kree weapon. After Mar-Vell’s death, Monica Rambeau and Mar-Vell’s son took the famous code-name. Danvers was known as Ms. Marvel for decades before she assumed the role.

This isn’t the first film to reveal lost heroes of the the Marvel Cinematic Universe. ANT-MAN revealed Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne were the original Ant-Man and Wasp, agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Fans will be waiting to see how the war with Thanos and the Infinity Gems in AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR could impact Captain Marvel’s story and how she could join Earth’s Mightiest Heroes like she did in comics.

CAPTAIN MARVEL is directed by the writing/directing team of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. A team of writers penned the screenplay, including Meg LeFauve, Nicole Perlman, Geneva Robertson-Dworet, Liz Flahive & Carly Mensch, and Anna Boden & Ryan Fleck.
