Marvel recruits fan-favorite writer Peter David (Incredible Hulk, All-New X-Factor) to help excite fans for the Star-Spangled Avenger’s next big screen adventure.

Chris Evans suits up as Steve Rogers in Captain America: The Winter Soldier coming in April. Today Marvel revealed a new Marvel Infinite comic prelude by David with Daniel Govar and art by Rock-He Kim (of the new upcoming X-Force series.)

The story is designed to bridge the gap in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and reveals a period just prior to the events of  the upcoming movie.

For the hardcore comic fan this description of the story reveals a critical part of Marvel history:

“Today, S.H.I.E.L.D. dispatches Captain America, Black Widow and Agent Rumlow to reclaim the mysterious “Zodiac” device at any cost. Tensions run high with the threat of terrorist reprisal in downtown Chicago, but Cap remains just as unnerved by his own handlers and their refusal to divulge the true nature of the weapon. What does Zodiac do and why does S.H.I.E.L.D. want it?”

From the movie trailer we know Scarlett Johansson is back as Black Widow, Frank Grillo plays Brock Rumlow, who turns on Steve but will he become the infamous masked villain known as Crossbones?

And in the comics “Zodiac” is the name of a super villain team with members taking code-names and costumes based on the astrological signs. One of the most infamous members is Scorpio – brother of Nick Fury and longtime nemesis of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Could it be that “Scorpio” is the mystery villain pulling the strings of Rumlow and Winter Soldier and the conspiracy within S.H.I.E.L.D. or is Marvel setting up a third Captain America solo movie?
