A shocking revelation in Captain America: Steve Rogers #1 shatters everything you thought you knew about the Star-Spangled Avenger.

Can it be true? Is Marvel’s most wholesome good guy really pure evil?

Steve Rogers was restored to his Super Soldier young self in the Avengers: Standoff finale but writer Nick Spencer delivered a massive secret about Rogers in this first issue .

Rogers is back with a new costume and shield but a mission that’s breaking hearts and twists the minds of Cap fans.

It’s impossible to miss the story but before discuss the implications of this shocker – just in case here’s a SPOILER ALERT!

If you have have not read yet stop reading now.

Seriously.

OK.

Here it comes.

After a battle with Baron Zemo, Rogers betrays a friend and utters, “Hail Hydra.”

Rogers is…and has always been…an operative of HYDRA, the evil organization he’s been battling since World War II.

This Rogers is not a clone, not a Rogers from an alternate universe, not a Skrull shapeshifter, not a Life Model Decoy – Marvel Executive Editor Tom Brevoort told USA Today.

“We knew it would be slapping people in the face.” Brevoort said.

The reborn HYDRA led by Red Skull is attracting disaffected and disenfranchised young people. We even see a flashback of a young Rogers and his mother being recruited.

The editor who guided Captain America from death, rebirth and more twists and turns over the decades also said only readers will know Steve’s allegiance to Hydra.

Here are the big burning questions:

Has Rogers been a sleeper and was he just triggered? Who is Steve’s controller?

We’ve seen a preview of Steve attempting to broker peace between Captain Marvel and Iron Man in Civil War II – what is this Hydra operative’s agenda in this war of heroes? Who does he think should win and will he attempt to seize the new Inhuman’s power for Hydra?

What happens when and if his closest friends and allies find out? Will Bucky, Sam, Natasha, Nick Fury or Sharon Carter arrest or kill Rogers to stop him?

Is Steve’s Hydra status a result of Kobik? After years of living as an older man without powers (the Super Soldier Serum was sucked out of his body) Steve was restore to his super powered youthful prime by Kobik (the Cosmic Cube in the sentient form of a child) and Rogers said, “it’s good to be back.” Did this cosmic force rewrite Steve’s past…and can it make Rogers the good guy we love? (Please?)

Steve Rogers has been many things:

Hero. Avenger. Freedom Fighter. Super Soldier.

Accused Traitor. Wolf. Dead. Reborn. Powerless. Re-powered.

And now…Hydra agent.
