The secret behind one of the most shocking of events of Civil War II is revealed in Steve Rogers: Captain America #5.
Both sides of the superhero war think they can trust Rogers. This Hydra sleeper is pitting hero against hero. Now we know this operative’s hand in the death of a major character.
Writer Nick Spencer keeps delivering the shock and awe in the book that restored Rogers to full power but far from the Sentinel of Liberty fans loved.
In this week’s huge issue Spencer and artist Javier Pina show the events of the first five issues from Rogers’ point of view.
Rogers was revealed to be a longtime Hydra sleeper thanks to a reconstructed past orchestrated by Red Skull and Kobik.
The emergence of the Inhuman Ulysses changed the Hydra Rogers plans. The Inhuman with the power to see the future could out him as a Hydra operative so Cap devised a dangerous plot to distract Ulysses.
Before we continue with breaking down this week’s chapter and what it means for the marvel universe here’s a SPOILER ALERT!
If you have not read Steve Rogers: Captain America #5 stop reading now.
Seriously.
OK.
Here it comes.
Hydra Cap’s distraction plot had deadly consequences for founding Avengers.
Rogers and Erik Solvig sent Bruce Banner an anonymous letter and drive claiming to have a cure for gamma radiation.
You may recall Banner had the monster inside under control and he was living as a recluse.
This trick lured Banner into his gamma research again and triggered Ulysses’s vision of a rampaging Hulk which led to the Avengers confronting Banner.
The showdown ended with Hawkeye killing Banner before he could Hulk out. Banner went to Clint Barton and asked him to kill him if the monster was about to be unleashed again.
This issue shows Cap’s point of view during the arrest of the woman falsely accused of executing a Hydra mission which lead to the big superhero fight in the last issue of Civil War II. During the big fight with divided Avengers, X-Men, Guardians, Ultimates and Inhumans – Ulysses started displaying new power signatures leading to a new vision: Steve Rogers dead at the hands of Spider-Man/Miles Morales.
This flashback clearly establishes Rogers and Selvig as having an indirect but critical role in Bruce Banner’s death. What did the Hydra operatives send Banner?
How will Rogers move ahead with his plot to kill the Red Skull and prevent being exposed by Ulysses? Will Morales really kill Steve? Does Spider-Man kill because he learns of Cap’s Hydra status?
