Marvel reveals new art from John Cassaday and a new interview with Joss Whedon about their upcoming reunion. The Astonishing X-Men team will work together again on a new story for Captain America’s 75th Anniversary as revealed in EW.
The Avengers director and acclaimed artist collaborated on an iconic and influential X-Men run. The new story starring Steve Rogers will appear in Captain America: Sam Wilson #7.
This is Whedon’s first time writing the hero in a comic book.
Whedon shared why the opportunity to tell a World War II era Steve Rogers appealed to him and what makes the hero still relevant decades later.
“You know it’s always a chance to look at the definition of a hero and the way that it changed and [the] definition of masculinity and the way that’s changed and you know the idea of a guy working with a platoon in the middle of a war zone where there is civilians; you get this feeling of selfless commodity that’s a lot different than just beating up the bad guy or shooting him.” Whedon told Marvel.com.
“I think it’s been a difficult journey. I think there were times when writers were struggling because you see [Cap] as old fashioned. But I think that his presence is always a comment on the times whether or not it’s because he is of them or because he doesn’t fit in them and particularly now as it’s further on from that era and we look back at it with some unwarranted nostalgia but also with a clearer eye to what it is we had that we have lost.”
The eight page story appears in Captain America: Sam Wilson #7 arriving March 30th.
