A huge year for Bucky Barnes takes a dark turn.

Bucky made a dramatic comeback on the big screen in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and stole the show with a critical role in Marvel’s big comics event Original Sin.

Now Bucky stars is a brand new solo series.Barnes was Captain America’s sidekick, enemy, ally and even became the Star-Spangled Avenger for a time.

Bucky Barnes: The Winter Soldier #1 by Ales Kot (Secret Avengers, Zero) and Marco Rudy hits this week following Original Sin. Coming out of the big event series, Bucky has a new classified role in the Marvel Universe taking over for Nick Fury.

“Bucky’s operating on an intergalactic stage now,” editor Wil Moss told The A.V. Club. “The entire Marvel Universe is his playing field, from the depths of Limbo to the heights of Asgard, and everywhere in between. It’d be like if the James Bond movies suddenly had access to the characters and settings of all the other great film franchises.”

Does Bucky want to be Nick Fury?

“Bucky wants to be himself! And he’s going to find out how that works, perhaps. That’s the beautiful thing about the world: we have to be ourselves. Everyone else is already taken,” series writer Ales Kot told Marvel.com.

As for Fury’s impact—well, he tried to make a case for his way being the right way. “The universe is a threat,” basically. How Bucky copes with that and works with it is a big part of our story.”
