Bucky Barnes was Captain America’s sidekick, enemy, ally and even became the Star-Spangled Avenger for a time.
The fan-favorite hero’s career takes a dramatic shift after the events of the Original Sin finale this week and into a brand new solo series.
Marvel shared a preview of Bucky Barnes: The Winter Soldier #1 by Ales Kot (Secret Avengers, Zero) and Marco Rudy.
The man who once fought Nazis with Cap in World War II appears to be fighting aliens in space and beyond.
In Original Sin, Bucky learned of Nick Fury’s secret missions to protect Earth from alien threats. Kot was asked if Barnes will become Fury in a new interview.
“Bucky wants to be himself! And he’s going to find out how that works, perhaps. That’s the beautiful thing about the world: we have to be ourselves. Everyone else is already taken,” Kot told Marvel.com.
As for Fury’s impact—well, he tried to make a case for his way being the right way. “The universe is a threat,” basically. How Bucky copes with that and works with it is a big part of our story.”
Kot confirmed Bucky’s supporting cast will include Daisy Johnson (Quake of Secret Warriors) and a new character named Ventolin he described as “a princess who doesn’t want to be a princess, a fluid gender being connected to the entirety of her race through telepathy.”
Kot said Namor will appear in the first issue and Bucky will hunt Loki in Asgard in issue 2.
Bucky Barnes: The Winter Soldier #1 arrives in October. For more on Bucky’s new role in the Marvel Universe pick up Original Sin #8 tomorrow.
