Cataclysm: The Ultimates Last Stand #5 is the showdown between the Ultimates vs. Galactus.
The world eating giant was unleashed on the Ultimate Universe after the Age of Ultron.
Marvel has revealed some of the survivors of Cataclysm (Miles Morales and an All-New Ultimates plus a very different Ultimate FF) but how and who else will live though the devastating last stand against Galactus.
Before the final chapter Cataclysm: The Ultimates Last Stand arrives next week – writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Joe Quinones talk the upcoming Survive one-shot. Who makes it out alive? How does the Ultimate universe change? Here are highlights from today’s Marvel liveblog:
On the final chapter of Cataclysm:
“Issue 5 is pretty exciting. and very action-packed as the heroes gathered together to implement their plan to save their world from a unstoppable force would really understand. is a true ending to the story,” said Bendis.
“And the emotional end to the story happens in survived. emotional fallout. much like Civil War the confession I really love the day after stories. as there are heroes that survive physically but how do they survive emotionally.”
On Survive:
“The entire issue lays out where everybody is emotionally and where everybody is going forward into this new ultimate universe. this shift in the dynamics of the ultimate universe is as big as the day the entire line was created,” said Bendis.
What happens after Survive:
“I think you can tell from the solicitations that this is a time for the younger heroes to step up and enter the brass ring. some familiar faces from Ultimate Spider-Man and some new heroes taking on new roles. deciding it after everything that has happened to rise up to the occasion and be the best they can be.” Bendis.
On More Ultimate Hero Deaths and the one that still has fans angered:
“I will say is that we have proven that in the ultimate universe that dead means dead. when someone dies it isn’t a guessing game on when they will come back. it is a story about what happens when that becomes part of the story for superheroes.”
“I get mail about the death of Peter Parker every day, passionate mail, because some people read stories at different times. and although it happened years ago in my life it happens to other people at other times. they are always very upset, not necessarily with me, just with the story. but it’s a very weird thing to have people come up to you all the time upset about something that happened a long time ago. also, spoilers,” Bendis replied following by this symbol: 🙂
Aftermath of Survive:
“In the real world we have all lived through catastrophe. whether you wanted to or not it defines you. if changes you. it makes you re-examine who you are and who you should be. now imagine a couple of dozen super powered people all doing that at the same time and deciding that things need to be different. that life is too precious. that reality itself is fragile. that means that life and love and life goals should all be taken very seriously. and every day should be treated as if it were your last because it might be. this is what the heroes are going through and how they are going to embrace their roles going forward.
And with that comes some very exciting stories. some of which will be familiar to those who love superhero comics but I think particularly with the writers we have that you’re going to see a freshness to this entire thing that you’re not going to see anywhere else.”
“You’re definitely going to see Spider-Man stories you have never seen before. and nothing makes me more proud. And after 50 years of Spider-Man stories on multiple titles, that is a bold statement. Following Survive is the 200th issue of ultimate spider–Man. I could not be more proud of the fact that we hit this milestone. initially ultimate Spiderman was a 6 issue miniseries. I kind of whined my way into making it an ongoing. to this day still one of my most successful whines.”
On the new Ultimate Spidey:
“In the next month we will have Miles Morales: the Ultimate Spider-Man. and I promise you that that number 1 issue has at least 3 jaw-dropping moments. because ultimate cataclysm has change miles life in every conceivable level and open us up to all kinds of new story possibilities. not only does he join the ultimate but his life will be turned completely upside down.”
A fan asked if someone will pick up Captain America’s mantle:
“I will tell you this someone picks his shield up at the end of the story and it is someone who has never picked up his shield before.”
One X-Men fan asked about the fate of mutants. Kitty Pryde will be part of the Ultimates. No new X-Men book has been announced.
“I know there is a lot of concern about the ultimate mutants because there is no ultimate X-Men book at the moment. but I promise you that the mutants, some of the X-Men, and the concern is a cornerstone of the ultimate universe going forward. anything else I say will be a spoiler but I think some of you have seen some of the preview art that shows a very great mutant doing a very brave thing in front of the world. an image that will not be forgotten.”
