One of Marvel’s big Comic-Con surprise announcements was the return of Blade.
The Daywalker is not alone in his new series by Tim Seeley and Logan Faerber.
The Vampire Hunter will be joined by his teenage daughter?!
16 year old Fallon Grey is the new Blade. Seeley calls her an “anti-Peter Parker” saying she’s popular and the world is hers until she learns her family legacy and she’s the daughter of Eric Brooks.
Before Spider-Man, before X-Men, there was Wesley Snipes as Blade, the first Marvel hero to leap to the big screen in the modern era. Snipes portrayed the Daywalker in three films.
Seeley explains the difference the Blade you know and his comic book counterpart as the vampire hunter becomes a father:
“I think Blade worked great in movies because his story is really simple,” Seeley told Marvel.com. “He’s half vampire, he hates vampires, he stabs them. Often. That’s a simple idea to hang a movie around, and I think the movies were largely about the action and the special effects. And hey, there’s nothing wrong with that.
“But when it comes to an ongoing [comic book] series, it’s important that the characters have depth and flexibility so we can get lots of stories out of them. We need some compelling supporting characters to riff off of and help define him or her. So, I felt like the key was to reach back to the original material, and mine it for ideas as to what made Blade such an interesting spark of an initial idea. (Series Editor) Katie (Kubert) and I decided Blade needed something to care about, and that his previously simple mission is the very reason he realizes he needs more to his life. He can’t go on just to stab vampires in their heads anymore. It’s not fulfilling. His rage and hate is subsiding as he gets older. And that’s when Fallon Grey comes along!”
Will the success of a new Blade lead to the return of the Nightstalkers? Could Marvel Studios lure Wesley Snipes back to play Blade and introduce his daughter?
Blade #1 arrives in October.
