To Natasha Fans, With Love.

That’s what the current Black Widow series is from writer Nathan Edmondson (Who Is Jake Ellis, Punisher) and artist Phil Noto (X-23, Astonishing X-Men).

Black Widow is an Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. She’s an Avenger. This new book stars Natasha when she’s not either of those roles. These are missions of atonement that she doesn’t want either team to know about.

Black Widow is still my favorite book of the All-New Marvel Now initiative of 2014. The first six issues are now collection in a trade: Black Widow: The Finely Woven Thread. This is a perfect title for a perfectly written and drawn series starring Marvel’s ultimate spy.

It would be easy to say “oh this is like the Hawkeye book but with Black Widow” but it’s not. This is Natasha using her deadly skills to try and make up for the sins of her past before her Avenging and S.H.I.E.L.D. days.

Edmondson and Noto knock us out with fast-paced issues that let you know who Natasha is now in action packed, globe-trotting adventures with just the right notes of drama and touches of humor.  and perfect moments that demonstrate just how lethal this woman is…and how haunted she is by who she used to be.

As Natasha takes on missions to make up for the “red” in her ledger that past comes back to haunt her.  One arc takes her back to Russia against the Hand of God. Natasha faces this new enemy that physically outmatches her and discovers a greater conspiracy.

After experiencing the first arc you might hope Edmondson and Noto are recruited for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. because you feel like you’re watching a thrilling episode of dark hero’s road to redemption. Marvel Studios may want to sign this team up to advise on a Black Widow solo movie. Black Widow: The Finely Woven Thread  is a gorgeous, pitch-perfect comic book take on Marvel’s cinematic leading lady.
