Robin is returning to Batman.

This week’s Detective Comics Annual is a new chance to see one possible candidate.

A resurrected Damian Wayne is the likeliest candidate. Batman is going to hell (or Apokolips) to try and bring Damian back from the dead in the pages of Batman and Robin by Peter Tomasi and Patrick Gleason.

Harper Row from Scott Snyder’s Batman run has long been rumored to be a new Robin. In Batman #28 – set 6 months in the future- Snyder revealed Row was a costumed hero called Bluebird.

There’s one more candidate you might have missed.

In April’s Detective Comics #30 we met daredevil biker Anna Aguila.

Creative team Francis Manapul and Brian Buccelleto launched their run with a gritty new mystery centering on Anna’s mother, her partnership with Bruce Wayne and the warring gangs trading in the deadly new drug Icarus.

In that issue Aguila pulls off motorcross stunts described as it’s “like she has wings to make her fly.”

This week’s Detective Comics Annual #3 Chaos Theory by written Buccellato delivers more back story of the current Icarus storyline.

We learn how Anna, called Annette by her boyfriend, gets entwined in the drug war between the Squid and the Kings of the Sun and how it could have led to her mother’s death.

Buccellatto tells the gritty, gripping story of how a drug shipment impacts everyone is touches in Gotham City in this tie-in. This is another chance to learn more about the tough teen dirt bike racer on a seemingly collision course with the Dark Knight.

Annette may be the long shot in the “who’s the next Robin” debate but she has the makings of a compelling new character in Gotham City and the New 52 Batman mythos.

Stay tuned.
