A shocking Batman confession that rocks the comics canon.
Writer Tom King gave a huge twist to the core of Batman’s origin and revealed the true meaning of the current arc I Am Suicide.
In Batman #12 we read a letter from Bruce Wayne to Selina Kyle. The confession reads as we follow the Dark Knight’s battle through Bane’s forces. The revelation adds a big shift to the moment Bruce decided to become the Batman and possibly his relationship with enemy/ally/lover/enemy Catwoman.
Before we continue here’s a SPOILER ALERT!
If you have not read Batman #12 yet stop reading now and get back to the comics shop.
Seriously.
OK.
Here it comes.
Bruce’s letter was after Selina’s transfer from Blackgate Prison to Arkham Asylum following her alleged murder of 237 victims. Bruce writes of their shared childhood traumas and confessing that he decided to dedicate his crusade to fight crime after a childhood suicide attempt.
Most fans assumed the arc referred to Batman’s Suicide Squad (including Kyle) in a mission against Bane. The Dark Knight invaded Santa Prisca to take Psycho-Pirate from Bane’s prison in order to save Gotham Girl from madness. The mission fell apart when Catwoman betrayed the team.
As Batman fights his way through an army of Bane’s soldiers we read his letter to Selina in which he shares his attempt to cut his wrist with his late father’s razor blade calling it surrender and moment later he made his vow to fight crime.
Bruce ends with calling his crusade as “the choice of a boy. The choice to die,” and stating, “I Am Batman, I Am Suicide.”
Bruce tells Selina how “we share our deaths” and “for a moment, we don’t die alone.”
Is the confession the true death of Bruce Wayne? How will this revelation play into the King’s long game for the Dark Knight?
Will Bruce defeat Bane, win Catwoman back, save Gotham Girl?
The Last Stand of Batman arrives in Batman #13.
