Could Batman have saved Robin?
Damian Wayne died in Batman, Incorporated but the aftermath has continued in the excellent Batman and Robin series by Peter J. Tomasi and Patrick Gleason. Since Robin’s death the series became Batman and a guest star as members of the Batman family joined Bruce in the road to recovery.
This week’s Batman and Nightwing #23 is the final steps to acceptance. It’s violent, painful and demonstrates the lasting power of Bruce and Richard.
I don’t want to give away the story twists and the emotional finale but I will tell this is an incredible issue for fans of Dick Grayson as he comes back to the Batcave for one final fight with Damian and Bruce against Robin’s killer. Batman and Robin #18 is still one of the best issues of the year but this week’s chapter is very similar. If you want to show a non-comic book reader the power of graphic storytelling then share Batman and Robin #18-#23.
Batman and Batman, Incorporated seem to receive more publicity by DC but I’ve loved this series too and even more when it evolved after Robin’s death. I wasn’t sure how the book about a dynamic duo would hold up after the death of one of the leads. Tomasi and Gleason accepted the challenge and crafted thrilling and moving chapters. From Carrie Kelly to Dick Grayson, the creators use the Batman family members in each story like a stage of grief for Bruce to reach this issue’s powerful finale.
I’m not sure now this book evolves after Villains Month but I look forward to Tomasi and Gleason having a role in the Batman family because this is one incredible storytelling team.
