Batman #23 is the best chapter yet in Zero Year as we experience the moment Bruce becomes the Bat.

You think you the story of Batman but Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo are making the origin exciting, gripping and new.

We jump right into a violent confrontation between Bruce and the Red Hood Gang. Snyder and Capullo messed with Bruce with cruel, creepy, manipulative methods through the Court of Owls and Joker in their previous arcs. The Red Hood Gang leader sadistically beats Bruce physically and emotionally as he shares the twisted connection between them and the night his parents were murdered.

The story shifts to the villains tied to the Gang. Zero Year is also the strange journey of Edward Nigma’s transformation into one of Batman’s greatest enemies. Snyder choice of the Riddler is perfect for this story. Nigma’s connections to the conspiracy at Wayne Enterprises and blood on the streets of Gotham City is a twisted puzzle.

The final moments of this book prove why this story is not just the birth of a legend but the continuing legacy of a legendary creative team. This is Batman Begins for The New 52. Snyder and Capullo are crafting a Dark Knight masterpiece.
