Jonathan Hickman just created the most dangerous hero in the Marvel Universe in this week’s Avengers #7.

More dangerous than Hulk. More than Thor. More than The Sentry.

Hickman is transforming what would call a failed experiment from the 1980’s and turning into a fascinating, thrilling storyline for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes that will shake the foundation of Universe 616.

You don’t need to know your comic book history to enjoy the current storyline but if do remember the New Universe then it adds layers of intrigue and awe to see what Hickman if crafting.

Universes are dying. Tony Stark with the ominous yet cryptic aid of Captain Universe and the New Adam try to solve the mystery of the impending threat. While the drama unfolds at Avengers Tower Hickman is setting us up for the big reveal while telling that universal story of a troubled teen to cheer for and to be very afraid of.

I’ve heard Hickman has stacks and stacks of notebooks full of research and long-term planning. As you read his Avengers you get that sense of plots within plots, massive story implications yet it still feels personal and filled with moments of drama and humor.

Dustin Weaver was Hickman’s creative partner on the SHIELD series and created the covers for the earlier Avengers issues.  Weaver and color artist Justin Ponsor bring Hickman’s high concepts to vibrant life from alien spacecraft swimming in what looks like cosmic blood to a lonely frustrated teen in high school hell.

A new generation of dangerous heroes is being born to save our universe but can the Avengers save us from them?

Imagine Lost but with superheroes with an injection of Stanley Kubrick. This book is a big, bold, brain-spinning, time twisting puzzle and exiting fun.

Thanks Mike – I’ve LOVED Hickman’s previous work knew he’d be great for Avengers. Taking on the New Universe is a big gamble that’s paying off.
