AVENGERS #21 Review

Two new tie-in chapters in the space opera Infinity arrived this week. I’ve loved the Avengers and New Avengers tie-ins. Reading them is like experience a director’s cut with extended scenes that enhance the overall story.

After a cheer-inducing (I know I yelled “YEAH!” when Thor hammered the enemy) and decisive victory against the Builders in Infinity #4 the war is far from over. Jonathan Hickman and Leinil Francis Yu pick up with war against the galaxy: a rebellion among the Kree, references to the Spaceknights and Annihilation as Captain America unleashes a desperate gambit to win the war…and fails.

The key to victory lies in the new Captain Universe. We haven’t seen much of her since Hickman revealed her backstory with an unexpected use of Shang-Chi early in his Avengers run. This week In Avengers #21 the bizarre and fascinating Ex Nihilos turn to their “Universal Mother” in last ditch effort against the Builders and ties into the events of New Avengers.

Infinity is a grand, complex sci-fi epic that never forgets the emotion, drama and personal stakes in a fight for the future of the Marvel Universe and a huge payoff for Hickman’s readers.
