Disney Investor Day delivered massive news for comics and sci-fi fans. The company’s announcements included ten new Marvel projects including blockbuster news of a Fantastic surprise.
Here’s a breakdown of the new shows and movies based on Marvel:
Chris Claremont. The writer who took over the X-Men, launched New Mutants, created iconic characters and penned epic stories that have been the basis of hit films. Five decades of Claremont’s contributions to comics and pop culture will be celebrated with a milestone story written by the legend himself.
Marvel announced the CHRIS CLAREMONT ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL #1 The writer will joined by artists including Brett Booth, Bill Sienkiewicz with a cover by Salvador Larroca. X-fans will celebrate a brand new story starring one of Claremont’s greatest creations.
Claremont wrote my first comic book so this X-fan is nostalgic and excited.
I shed a tear watching the trailer for DUNE. I adore the Frank Herbert novel. I have read almost all the books, prequels and sequels and seen the original film and mini-series. If I must wear a still suit and space helmet, I want to see this new vision by director Denis Villeneuve.
I could not get the ironic real-life circumstances out of my mind. Watching a trailer for a story about a planet with an environment so hostile humans must wear special suits to go out in the deep desert. The film is based on a novel that is a classic with so many levels: a space soap opera of good versus evil, an environmental message about the impact of trying to manipulate a planet’s ecosystem and the stagnation of humanity needing to be awakened like the central hero of the novel.
Every so often our universe is thrown upside down, blown up and rebuilt. I’m talking comic book universes.
In life, we are now experiencing a Crisis of Finite Comic Book Shops, a Comic Industry Disassembling – to borrow inspiration from some of my favorite epics. An invisible enemy is infecting every aspect of our day to day universe. Even the escapism of new comics is on hold.
Lives are at stake as our health and safety must take highest priority. Our ordinary lives are being dramatically impacted by the extraordinary measures to protect against an unimaginable threat. The necessary changes are hitting small business owners especially hard including local comic book stores.
Fighting to slow the spread of the Covid-19 virus is impacting every aspect of our lives. Many of the geeky escapes we love are on hold or delayed for now. Cinemas are shut down, major public events must cancel or postpone and even the flow of comic books has come a crashing halt.
