The strange journey of Angela takes a new twist in a brand new Marvel series. The character co-created by Neil Gaiman first appeared as an enemy of Spawn in the Image Comics Universe.
The character was brought into the Marvel Universe as a result of events in Age of Ultron where she hooked up with the Guardians of the Galaxy. Events in Original Sin reveal she’s an angel from the Tenth Realm and the daughter of Odin.
Announced at San Diego Comic Con, Angela: Asgard’s Assassin continues the angry angel’s story with
writers Kieron Gillen and Marguerite Bennett and artists Stephanie Hans and Phil Jimenez.
Gillen calls her an “Asgardian Black Widow” and tells Marvel.com, “It’s recently known that she’s Thor’s sister, who was lost during an ancient war between the Angels, who are the people who raised her, and Asgard, who are the people who the Asgardians come from. And now that Angela’s being revealed to be the daughter of Odin and she’s been ostracized by her own people, the Angels, who completely despise the Asgardians and she also still hates the Asgardians so she’s kind of like a girl without a home. There’s a lot Ronin to her, a lot of Lone Cowboy when we meet her.”
Angela will have a sidekick and Bennett explains how she and Gillen are collaborating together on the storytelling.
“We felt that within each story we’re going to have a story that’s told by Sara, who is a new companion of Angela’s and who has known her for a very, very long time but has been lost. And so when Sara is reintroduced she brings in a knowledge of Angela and begins to tell these stories that are interwoven into the plot. They’re not backups, they are authentic and organic to the story as it functions and she spins out these legends and cautionary tales and dire warnings of the idea of who Angela was and how she’s known and the great myths that have sprung out of her wake. And then those myths are highlighted or destroyed by the actual actions that you’ll see Angela taken throughout the story and so just the idea of who she was supposed to be, who she was heralded to be, and who she is now and who she intends to become.”
The writing team explains Jimenez will be artist on the main story while Hans will provide art for the mythology stories.
This new series reunited Gillen and Hans who worked together on Journey Into Mystery.
Angela: Asgard’s Assassin #1 arrives this Fall.
