The web of Spider-Man is getting bigger as Sony bets on the webslinger’s universe of villains.
“We are expanding the ‘Spider-Man’ universe into ‘The Sinister Six’ and ‘Venom,’ so that we have ‘Spider-Man’ movies every year,” says Sony co-chair Amy Pascal in a new Variety story.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opens May 2nd. Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) takes on Electro, Rhino but Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan) will transform into the Green Goblin and not to mention Harry Osborn (Chris Cooper) may or may not an off-camera nemesis. B.J. Novak has been revealed as Alistair Smythe, creator of the Spider-Slayer robots. The trailer clearly shows some hardware from classic Spidey villains like Doc Ock and Vulture in the vaults of Oscorp.
Which Spider movies could be next?
Sinister Six (The original roster was Dr. Octopus, Electro, Kraven the Hunter, Mysterio, Sandman.) Could Sony have Jamie Foxx signed up for a sequel and return as Electro? The big question is who’s good guy?
Venom (Eddie Brock, Mac Gargan, Flash Thompson) have all bonded with the alien symbiote. To keep the Parker connection I say producers should chose with Thompson as the black ops operative version of Venom. Parker’s former high school nemesis turned army hero became the U.S. government’s “Venom” an even served in the Secret Avengers. The symbiote split off and bonded with death row inmate Cletus Kassidy and became Carnage – a perfect enemy for Venom.
Black Cat (Felicia Hardy) is one of my favorite Marvel anti-heroines. Hardy is the daughter of a world famous cat burglar. After suffering a trauma in her freshmen year of college, Hardy became a master of various fighting styles and followed in her father’s infamous shadow. I’d love to see Black Cat take on the cyborg mafioso machine known as Silvermane.
