AGENTS OF SHIELD Finale Burning Questions

MARVEL’S AGENTS OF SHIELD will return.

Team Coulson stopped the Destroyer of Worlds and saved Earth but with a price in an action, emotion packed season five finale. Fans are left with big questions.

For the heroes it came down a choice: save Coulson or save the planet

The final episode saw the exit of major characters in what felt like a series ending but earlier this week ABC announced the show will return for a sixth season but with a twist.

The sixth season won’t hit until 2019 with fewer episodes that previous seasons. It’s likely the next and perhaps final season will pick up after the events of the still untitled AVENGERS 4 film.

The finale wrapped up the big plot points of preventing the Earth from being ripped apart by Quake as seen in the future from the first half of the season. The season pulled elements all the way from season one – gravitonium, Deathlok, centipede serum – and past seasons – Glenn Talbot, Crusher Creel – in a twisted filled epic.

With deaths, exits of a different kind, the impact of the Infinity War and other Marvel movies – what could happen next with our beloved agents?

Here’s our biggest moments and burning questions.

Before we continue here’s a SPOILER ALERT!

If you have not season the AGENTS OF SHIELD finale or AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR stop reading now.

Seriously.

OK.

Here it comes.

Coulson and May in Paradise?

Phil Coulson’s body is dying (the price he paid after a deal with Ghost Rider in season four) but he passed on the cure so the centipede serum could be used to stop Graviton (a super powered Glen Talbot).  Coulson and Melinda May were last seen holding hands on a tropical island as the rest of the team flew away. Has the  long-simmering attraction and devotion finally turned to true love? Are they on a real island paradise or back in a “Tahiti” like the program Coulson was in during his resurrection in the time between the first Avengers film (when he was killed by Loki) and the first episode of the series? Has Phil really accepted his fate or is there hope of finding a cure? Can two people who lived their lives for action and adventure really settle down to enjoy each other in retirement?

Mack, Director of SHIELD

Coulson groomed Daisy to be his successor but she was always more like a daughter. Mack was nominated as the new team leader. How will he rebuild the broken agency. How will what’s left of SHIELD on the series tie into the films? If you recall in the INFINITY WAR post-credits scene – Nick Fury and Maria Hill were reunited and in the middle of the action in New York City when they were among those “killed” by Thanos.

FitzSimmons No More?

Fitz and Simmons, the super scientists married this season and assumed they would survive no matter what since Deke was their future grandson. When Deke confessed his fears to Daisy about possibly be wiped out of existence if they succeeded in stop Talbot – I thought it might be an omen that someone may not get out alive. I hoped Fitz would have a more heroic meaningful death instead of dying in the building collapse caused by Daisy’s fight with Talbot. Fitz’s final moments were with Mack who then had to share the news with Simmons. Will the events of AVENGERS 4 impact the team? We have to hope Steve, Tony, Stephen, Natasha and the other survivors will find a way to reverse the snap of Thanos. Could the use of a the Time Stone in the film rewind the events of this past season meaning Fitz lives, Coulson takes the centipede serum?

Young Coulson:

CAPTAIN MARVEL opens in March of 2019 starring Brie Larson as Carol Danvers aka the title hero. The film is set in the 1990’s and includes a younger Phil Coulson and Nick Fury (Clark Gregg and Samuel L. Jackson reprising their roles). Fury’s final act in AVENGERS INFINITY WAR before he died in the Thanos snap was to signal Captain Marvel. Could the events of CAPTAIN MARVEL and AVENGERS 4 change Coulson’s fate?

Unfinished Business:

Inhumans

Marvel’s INHUMANS series starring the Royal Family may be the biggest misfire in the franchise and is not returning. Daisy descended from a different tribe of Inhumans. There’s still all the new Inhumans triggered by Terrigenesis. There are Inhumans in the alternate future (Flint) seen in the first half of the past season. The Inhumans are a huge part of Marvel history with ties to Avengers, Fantastic Four and even the X-Men and the Kree Empire. Inhumans were created by the Kree. A Kree weapon gives Captain Marvel her powers. Will the Inhumans make a comeback on the series or in another part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe? In the comics at least, it doesn’t look good – DEATH OF THE INHUMANS hits stores in July.

Fans are left to mourn for Fitz, ponder the final days of Coulson with May and what’s next for the active Agents of SHIELD in a Marvel Cinematic Universe shattered by an even bigger loss of life but anchored on hope.
