The war between traitor Grant Ward and Phil Coulson turns even darker when Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns.

Just when you thought Coulson’s nemesis was finally gone, Ward is back but he’s not the same bad guy you know.

Marvel shared a first look at Brett Dalton as Grant Ward in his new identity. How did the ruthless agent turn into a zombie-looking monster?

Before we reveal Ward’s new identity and the comic book origins here’s a SPOILER ALERT in case you didn’t catch all of the first half of season three.

Hydra’s origin and agenda was tied to an Inhuman secret. The evil organization was seizing new Inhumans to be an army for an ancient Inhuman stranded on the planet Maveth. In the midseason finale, it appeared Ward was killed but he was possessed by the Inhuman entity.

Ward is now possessed by an Inhuman named Hive.

In the comics Hive is from the Secret Warriors comics. The Hydra operative became the human host for multiple mutated parasites and formed a group consciousness. Marvel revealed this version “will have a twist all its own.”

Agent Skye (now Daisy aka Quake) will be joined by more new characters from the Secret Warriors comics. Last season Leviathan from the comics plotted against the agents. Both Leviathan and Hive were on the Hydra High Council in comics canon.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns March 8th.
