Joss Whedon and the cast and creative team of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. answered fan questions and previewed the upcoming series in a special Marvel liveblog. The new series will be set in The Avengers universe following the Iron Man 3. Clark Gregg reprises his role as Agent Phil Coulson in the series. Cobie Smulders returns as Agent Maria Hill in the pilot.
“Every week, it’s not going to be some new hero. It could be a device, or a mystery, or anything. They want to switch it up and deal with every aspect–the heartfelt stuff, the spy stuff, everything,” said Whedon.
While the team will encounter potential heroes and villains with incredible powers and weapons Whedon explained how important is it for the members of this team to not be super powered?
“The thing that appealed to me was the idea of the people who don’t have the super powers. Everybody matters. The people that get shoved to the side in a giant epic movie that only lasts for two hours can step into the spotlight. The TV show is very much about, “What about the rest of us? How do we cope with this?”
The panel avoided revealing how Coulson survived Loki’s fatal stabbing in The Avengers. The idea of a Coulson LMD came up. The Life Model Decoy is often used by Nick Fury in Marvel Comics.
Clark describes Coulson as a magnificent chain letter that started as a character in two scenes in Iron Man with Jon Favreau; then when he started riffing off of RDJ, his role grew. Then he was in another movie. Then Thor with Kenneth Branagh. Each director/writer/creator has added something new to the character.
Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. premieres September 24.
