We learned about a tragedy from Peggy’s past that made her become the famous agent loved and lost Captain America.

In flashback we saw a six year old Peggy play fighting with her brother and mother. Then a mid-twenties Peggy is working as a code breaker in the same facility in which the code breakers were crucial to winning World War II. Peggy is also engaged and wanting a life as a wife and mother and turned down a job in with British covert ops in the war.
Fred deterred his fiancee from her job in espionage while Peggy’s brother encouraged it. We see Peggy in her wedding dress but the happy day ends in tragedy as Peggy’s brother is killed in action. This is the moment that makes Peggy leave Fred and become a spy.
