Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) is moving to Hollywood for the second season of Marvel’s Agent Carter.
Producers reveal the big villain of the sophomore season is a “new spin” on a classic Iron Man enemy.
After the ABC Television Critics Association event, show executive producers Tara Butters and Chris Dingess revealed Madame Masque is the big bad Peggy will face in the City of Angels.
“I think we’ve changed the look of her a bit obviously. We’ve made her an actress, which is very Hedy Lamar. She was a ‘40s siren actress who was also a scientific genius, so that’s part of what we’re mining with this character.” Butters told Slash Film.
The team was asked about why Peggy’s main antagonist will be a woman this season.
“For me it is, because I feel like that is something that… as much as there are not enough female heroes just on television, I feel like having a female villain is just as equally powerful.” said Butters.
“I also think because she’s a female villain, her story informs Peggy’s story in a unique way and vice versa.” said Dingess.
Producers say they have cast the role but can’t reveal the actress yet.
In the comics Madame Masque is Whitney Frost, daughter of Count Nefaria of the Maggia (Marvel’s version of organized crime families like the Mafia.) Whitney had a romance with Tony Stark. In a failed scheme to steal Stark technology, Whitney was hideously scarred and she donned her iconic gold mask.
Masque is an expert at hand to hand combat, weapons and she’s a master strategist. Whitney and The Hood organized a massive network of villains working together against the Avengers.
Madame Masque is among our top characters we wanted to see on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. but we’re intrigued to see the 1950’s take on the villainess.
