Warbird’s Reveal to Wolverine

Astonishing X-Men #50 by Mike Perkins, courtesy Marvel

Warbird is not a mutant but she’s a welcome addition to the X-Men family. Jason Aaron and Chris Bachalo introduced the Shiar warrior women in Wolverine and the X-Men #1. Warbird is the bodyguard to Kid Gladiator, a student at Logan’s school.

This “Kid” is the arrogant son of the Shiar Emperor. You know him as Gladiator, former leader of the Imperial Guard under Lilandra.

Warbird’s real name is Ava’Dara Naganandini. She’s an elite warrior sworn to protect the ruling family of the Shiar Empire. Warbird was assigned to protect Kid Gladiator and she’s fought with Wolverine and the teachers of the Jean Grey School of Higher Learning.

Marjorie Liu is using Warbird on her team in Astonishing X-Men too. The first time Liu and Mike Perkins showed in that series she was holding a severed head and the last issue she announced she wanted to engage in “mating rituals” with Iceman after a battle with the Marauders.

Warbird has super strength and exceptional fighting abilities. A fan asked Liu about the warrior woman’s other abilities in the latest X-Position on Comic Book Resources.

“She reveals a startling ability to Wolverine in issue #50” Liu responded and get my mind swirling.  Wolverine knows how to pick ’em. Will Logan engage in “rituals” with the Shiar?

Liu transformed a ruthless killer into a character you could sympathize with during her X-23 run. I’m excited to see what Liu will do with this new character that’s already made a killer impression.

Chris Hemsworth & Charlize Theron Clash in New “Show White & The Huntsman” Scene

courtesy Universal

Chris Hemsworth is flying high as Thor in Marvel’s The Avengers but he’s not so heroic and regal in his next big screen role. Hemsworth is confronted by Charlize Theron (Prometheus) in a new scene from Snow White and the Huntsman courtey of Yahoo and Universal.

A big year for Hemsworth (he was also in Cabin in the Woods.) I’m excited for this dark and gritty take on the classic story. Director Rupert Sanders appears to have created a nightmarish fairy tale. Snow White and the Huntsman opens June 1st. Kristin Stewart of Twilight is the lead. This is a version of the tale I can see in Fables.

Seattle Video Villain Rex Velvet Is Back

courtesy Rex Velvet?

Satirical fun by a creative mind or something else? Rex Velvet issued another challenge to the real life super hero movement of the Emerald City. A week ago the self-proclaimed super villain of Seattle revealed himself to the media. He shared this video with the media.

It was just one of the many ironic stories last week about the “real super hero” movement in Seattle in a Marvel comic book, at an Avengers film series and on YouTube.

Rex Velvet has unveiled a new video. You can watch it here:

Prometheus Rated R

Prometheus courtesy 20th Century Fox

Ridley Scott’s Prometheus will be rated R. The news came via a ticket stub you can see on  Collider.com. The studio confirmed the MPAA rating is “for sci-fi violence including some intense images and brief language.”

Before the rating decision 20th Century Fox’s Tom Rothman said “This I can tell you and I can tell all the fans, not one frame will be cut. The movie will be what it should be. We will not cut a frame of the film,” he promised. “We will stand behind it 100 percent and if that means it’s an R, then so be it, because not an ounce, not a percentage are we going to compromise the film.”

A rated R summer tent pole movie may not be the best financial decision so I commend Scott and Fox to following his vision. Personally I’m thrilled that this is the movie Scott wants to make and it’s not edited for a bigger audience. I commend Fox and can’t wait to see the film.  Let’s take a moment to enjoy the trailer and salute Ridley Scott’s return to sci-fi!

Avengers 2 Confirmed

Marvel's The Avengers courtesy Marvel

Avengers 2 was confirmed by Disney CEO Bob Iger during a conference call to report quarterly earnings according to The Hollywood Reporter. With a global box office of $700 + million in two weeks for the Avengers I bet that was a happy call.

Iger confirmed a third Iron Man, a second Thor film are scheduled for 2013. A Captain America sequel is in the works for 2014. No timeline was given for an Avengers sequel.

The CEO added there are plans for Avengers inspired attractions at Disney theme parks.

How about an Iron Man flight simulator or Stark Tower ride?

The Pentagon and the Avengers Movie?

Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury in The Avengers courtesy Marvel.com

The U.S. Military often works with blockbuster movies by having the latest vehicles appear on the big screen with the stars. The Pentagon quit working with Marvel’s The Avengers. Why? The Defense Department thought one element of the story was too unrealistic. Was it the Norse Gods, alien armada or the Hulk? It was the film’s treatment of military bureaucracy according to a new story in Wired.com.

SHIELD is an international peacekeeping force led by Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson.) The organization doesn’t have a direct relationship with the United States – its more of a global agency. In the film, Fury reports to a Council which appears to be made up of members from various nations. That ambiguity is what made the U.S. Military not participate.

Cobie Smulders in The Avengers courtesy Marvel Films

“We couldn’t reconcile the unreality of this international organization and our place in it,” Phil Strub, the Defense Department’s Hollywood liaison, tells Danger Room. “To whom did S.H.I.E.L.D. answer? Did we work for S.H.I.E.L.D.? We hit that roadblock and decided we couldn’t do anything” with the film.

For the entire story here’s the Wired.com link.

The film is a good recruiting movie for SHIELD if you can fit in the suits! Here’s hoping a SHIELD movie with Jackson, Cobie Smulders and new agents might happen.

Night of the Owls Strikes Batman, Robin and Batgirl

The Night of the Owls crossover claws into two more Bat-titles this week. The Council of Owls have unleashed a wave of assassins on Gotham City’s most prominent leaders in a bid to seize control. Nightwing #8 featured a battle to save the Mayor. Batwing #8 saw David the only between a Talon and Lucius Fox.

This week Batman #9 takes us back into Batcave for showdown between Batman and the invading Talons. The back up story delves into the past. What secret did Alfred’s family keep from the Waynes? The tie between Bruce and one of his closest allies has been twisted. Will Bruce loose Alfred too?

Batgirl #9 courtesy DC Comics

Batman’s allies are answering his call to protect the Council’s targets but for Batgirl it’s personal in Batgirl #9 as a Talon goes after her father, Commissioner Gordon.

Batman and Robin #9 Robin alone against a Talon. Can Damian survive a fight with this ultimate, unstoppable killer?

Greg Capullo deserves huge credit. After creating the Talon in the first Batman arc he created various versions of the Council of Owls’ assassin from Gotham’s past.

A Fan’s Avengers Sequel Dreams

Avengers Origins: Ant-Man & The Wasp courtesy Marvel.com

Marvel’s The Avengers exceeded all expectations! The ending left us with the promise of cosmic level villain and storyline. More on that ending here – careful there be spoilers!

I would love to see Earth’s Mightiest Heroes take on Ultron because that would also mean the introduction of Henry Pym and Janet Van Dyne (aka Ant-Man & the Wasp!) (I can’t be root for Firefly reunion with Nathan Fillion and Summer Glau in those roles)

Ultron is a criminally insane sentient robot obsessed with the eradication of humanity. Dr. Henry Pym used his own brain patterns in experiments to create a sentient artificial intelligence. The robot gained Pym’s intelligence and his mental instability but without any human conscience.

Avengers #22 courtesy Marvel.com

Ultron created the Vision to infiltrate and destroy the Avengers but he betrayed his maker and became an Avenger (and husband of the Scarlet Witch.) Janet was Henry’s girlfriend and eventually became known as the Wasp. Ultron created a robot bride Jocasta modeled after Jan. Jocasta turned on her maker too.

Maybe that’s too many new Avengers and too many robots but what a villain! This cover is from the excellent Kurt Busiek and George Perez Avengers era.

That’s just a geek dream. After Joss Whedon’s direction and Marvel Films production of The Avengers I’d even be excited about Egghead as the villain in the sequel!
