A Geek’s Dream Come True!

ComicsBlend.com

I started ComicsBlend.com last November in time for my birthday after years of friends saying you should do something creative with your love of comics! This year at Emerald City Comicon it was my first time as a fan and a blogger! I had t-shirts made and on a whim I took one along with me as I asked for writer and artist autographs. I had my amazing shirt framed and it’s back! Thanks to all the creators I got to meet, the awesome crowd at ECCC for producing an amazing event and especially all the fans and friends of my blog!

Big thanks to Matt Fraction, Kelly Sue DeConnick, Ed Brubaker, Marc Silvestri, Gail Simone, Chris Burnham, Greg Capullo, Terry & Rachel Dodson, Joe Eisma, Adi Granov, Shane Houghton, Georges Jeanty, Robert Kirkman, David Mack, Clay Mann, Dustin Nguyen, Rick Remender, Sam Humphries, Phillip Tan, Dexter Vines, Dustin Weaver, Matt Whitlock and Christopher Yost.

Ridley Scott on Prometheus Cut and Rating

No rating yet but Director Ridley Scott says he shot Prometheus with an R rating in mind. At a Paris press conference the director says the film that ends up in theaters will be his cut.

“The cut that you’re gonna see in cinemas…it’s always the director’s cut, really… In this instance, you got a pretty good version here, pretty good cut. We’re running at about — I think without the end titles, which normally run about four to five minutes — we’re running one hour, fifty-nine minutes and change. It’s very tight, it’s what it should be” he told the media.

Thanks to Dark Horizons for the story.

Invincible Iron Man #515 arrives in comic book stores this week with the ominous tease “a hero falls.”

Chris Evans on Captain America’s Role & Suit in “The Avengers”

Captain America: The First Avenger left off with World War II era super soldier waking up in modern-day New York. Marvel’s The Avengers picks up Steve’s story as a man out of time. Chris Evans reprises his role as the wholesome hero who lives by a moral code.

“Cap is struggling to find his footing in a modern-day,” Evans tells Marvel.com. “He’s a fish out of water [and] kind of stuck in his old mentality and his old ways. The jet and all the technology of S.H.I.E.L.D. and [Iron Man’s] suit–that does blow his mind, but the thing that he’s really at odds with is…the changes in society. Morals and values, and the way people interact.” With the modern age comes a new suit for the Star Spangled Avenger. Evans appears to be happy with the SHIELD made version of his iconic uniform.

“The last [suit] was…very difficult to move in,” he confesses. “This one actually looks much more like the comic book. A little toastier, but it all looks great. Doing ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’ was strange because you look around and you’re the only super hero walking around. [Then] the first day on this set, Hemsworth’s in his cape and Downey’s got the armor. Just on a personal career level, the stuff I’ve been able to do in this movie…has been the most geeked out I’ve ever felt on a movie set.”

Marvel’s The Avengers opens May 4th and the Captain America sequel is slated for April 4, 2014.

Batman Writer on Night of the Owls

Batman #8 courtesy DC Comics

Night of the Owls begins this week with Batman #8 and Nightwing #8. The Court of Owls and their army of enforcers, the Talons, launch a full-scale assault on Gotham City and the Batman family.

Batman writer Scott Snyder previews the battle for Gotham’s soul and massive crossover.

“Night of the Owls is here, and it’s about time.”

“I think that’s what a lot us on team Batman have been feeling these last few days. Because for us, this is the moment – the moment we’ve been excitedly working on and building towards for months. This is it, and now it’s really here! This is the night when the Court of Owls makes its move, sending close to 60 Talons out into the skies of Gotham, each with a deadly mission designed to help bring the city to its knees. Of course, the missions will also bring the Talons crashing into conflict with almost every member of the Bat-family, and even though this whole story takes place on one single night, for many of Gotham’s heroes, these clashes will have terrifying consequences that linger long after Gotham’s fate is decided.

“Night of the Owls is here, and it’s about time.”

“There’s another reason that phrase sticks with me, though. And that’s because the story itself is about time, about history. For one thing, with every Talon having come from a different era of Gotham’s past, they’ll be plenty of glimpses literally and figuratively into Gotham’s history, with a lot of shocking secrets from the past being revealed. Basically, the story is about Gotham’s dark past being brought to bear against the heroes of the present – about the evil from decades, even centuries of corruption emerging from the shadows to crush the spirit of the city – and the Bat-family – once and for all, in one single night, now.”

This Geek’s Opinion: The Court of Owls story is one of the most gripping stories I’ve read. As much as I enjoy Batman’s Rogues Gallery, it’s a credit to Snyder and artist Greg Capullo that they’ve taken an enemy (in this case, it’s an organization, an idea of evil) and made them so impactful. Greg Capullo deserves huge accolades for his incredible, haunting art. The Owl masked Council members and the Talon are so simple yet terrifying. And Batman #5 alone is a stunning achievement in storytelling. Capullo has designed an intricate army of Talons from various eras.

Most fans suffer from event-fatigue but we still buy the crossover anyway. I’m anticipating and eagerly excited for every chapter of Night of the Owls.

Thor & Kid Loki Crossover- Updated

Everything Burns promotional art by Stephanie Hans courtesy Marvel.com

Thor & Kid Loki team up to save the Nine Realms from Surtur in Everything Burns a 7 part crossover between The Mighty Thor and Journey Into Mystery by Matt Fraction, Kieron Gillen, Alan Davis and Carmine di Giandomenico. Marvel revealed the story, cover and promotional art at C2E2.

Updated: The crossover will kick off this August in The Mighty Thor #18-#22 and Journey Into Mystery #642-#645.  Fraction and Gillen talked with Marvel.com about the event.

“It’s an epic,” Gillen says, explaining who will take on a prominent role in the story. “Thor and Loki are the heart of it all, but everyone else is the circulatory system around them, pumped full of fiery blood, ready to explode. Any significant player in JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY at least has a moment, and several are absolutely key.”

The Mighty Thor #18 cover by Alan Davis courtesy Marvel.com

“This story is about asking the question ‘What can break the bonds of brotherhood?’” Fraction asserts. “How long can Thor stand at Loki’s side? How many angles can Loki play at once? What Thor and Loki share is inconceivable to everyone but themselves. So whatever breaks it would have to be beyond comprehension, right?”

New Gambit Solo Series

Gambit #1 courtesy Marvel

Marvel announced a new Gambit series by James Asmus (Captain America & Bucky, Generation Hope)and Clay Mann (X-Men Legacy) debuting this August.

“This story will break Gambit out into the larger Marvel Universe. We are trying to make it as accessible to new fans as well as everyone who loved Gambit in the past,” said Asmus.

Before he was a hero, Remy LeBeau was a master thief. Remy’s criminal past came back to haunt him – especially his connection to Mister Sinister and the Mutant Massacre.

“He’s one of the greatest thieves in the Marvel Universe,” Asmus continued and confirmed Rogue will play a part in the series.

Here’s the C2E2 Next Big Thing panel play by-play on Marvel.com.

This Geek’s Opinion: I’m a big fan of James Asmus and Clay Mann’s art. I love Gambit but as part of a team. Remy is currently part of X-Men Legacy, where’s a slow burning attraction building with Frenzy, and Astonishing X-Men. This new series is in the aftermath of AvX so who knows what twists and turns are coming for the mutants. I will definitely give it try.
