John Carter – The First 10 Minutes

Taylor Kitsch and Lynn Collins in Disney's John Carter

It’s the final countdown to John Carter on the big screen. Director Andrew Stanton brings the creation of novelist Edgar Rice Burroughs (and star of Marvel Comics series) to cinemas March 9th.

Disney released an early 10 minutes of the film. We see a young man named Edgar start reading the journals left by his late uncle. This is a great introduction to the war weary but eager to fight John Carter exploring in the Arizona territory back in 1868. It’s smart to begin the story through the eyes of a young man with the sense of mystery and wonder.

A mystery posting on Marvel.com today heralds the debut of Marvel Infinite Comics. The image ny Stuart Immonen starred Nova blasting through space and showing the Avengers Vs. X-Men branding. Here’s what they teased:

“Join the Revolution.

It’s coming to the historic Marvel: House of Ideas panel Sunday, March 11 at 1 PM on the Arcade Stage presented by IGN at the Palmer Events Center in Austin, TX. This show is free and the public!

Stay tuned to Marvel.com and SXSW.com for more details on the Marvel: House of Ideas panel and Marvel’s plans for SXSW!”

This Geek’s Opinion:

This is definitely a digital comics push but could this focus be on Marvel’s cosmic characters only?

My first thought “an exciting new way to enjoy comics” but I have to admit I also thought “so it’s not enough I have to buy an untold number of issues but download more to get the entire AVX storyline?”

Captain Marvel IS SHAZAM!

Shazam! courtesy DC Comics, a New York Post exclusive

Will comic fans be electrified by the new interpretation of a classic character? The new look of Shazam designed by Gary Frank premiered in the New York Post. The DC Comics New 52 version of the icon will debut in Justice League #7 in a new back-up story according to The Source.

With SHAZAM! Gary and I will be focusing on the magic hero instead of the super hero,” Johns said. “For centuries, science has ruled the world, but now magic is returning. We’re telling the story of the hero’s young alter ego, Billy Batson, a foster kid at a crossroads in his life. The question is, how does the emotional journey of this troubled teenager collide with the fate of the world? The Rock of Eternity and the legacy of SHAZAM! will be explored in a different way as the extent of Billy’s connection to the magic world around him is greater than ever before. The story will have a profound impact on Justice League later in the year and you’ll see new characters, locations and creatures along with the classics from the SHAZAM! universe. Billy’s friends and enemies will be along for the ride.”

“You’ll notice that SHAZAM! looks different from many of the other heroes we’ve seen in DC COMICS-THE NEW 52,” said editor Brian Cunningham. “That was definitely intentional. His powers come from a different place, and we wanted to see that reflected in the design. We’ve removed the “circus strongman” elements from his costume. Rather than a traditional cape, he wears a cloak with a hood; there’s more of a mystical, magical, fantasy feel to that.”

What do you think of the hooded hero and his new name?

I remember enjoying the Captain Marvel half hour live action series on Saturday mornings.

Zombie Outlaw #1 courtesy Comixpress.com

Matt is a shy college geek smitten with K.T. his gorgeous lab partner. Will is Matt’s overeager resident advisor who promises to help him win the girl if he gets him through his graduate thesis.

Will’s obsession with a local horror legend leads to an underground lair. Just when the guys think they’ve got the key to the mystery all hell bites loose. Trying to win the heart of a hot girl unearths a cold dead curse buried in the college library.

This is a fun adventure with a geeky guy to cheer for, a hot chick and zombies on campus. Matt and K.T. are like Peter Parker and M.J. with the humor, curves ramped up to comedic levels.

Over the top art in unique panel layouts mixed with quick pacing make this a fun escapade. A story of bookish guys, boobs and brains with a sense of mystery, comedy and horror.

Congratulations Brian and Benny on delivering a fun ride.

The artist, Benny Jordan (aka B. Paul Jordan) is working on another project, with Jason Dube of Scattered Comic Studios, a great new comic with the title of “Shadow Hunters.”
