AVX: X-Kids in Avengers Custody

Avengers Academy #23 courtesy Marvel

Christos Gage answered fan questions about the future of X-Men Legacy and Avengers Academy revealing how both teams will be impacted by Avengers Vs. X-Men. The mutant kids of Utopia will be held at Avengers Academy leading to an odd reunion for X-23 and her former teammates.

“There are indeed scenes between X-23, Surge and Dust, and they were fun — for me, not for the characters involved! This storyline definitely looks at X-23 and how she has developed as a person since her days with the New X-Men, as well as how she is continuing to develop. As for the Westchester kids coming to break them out, they’re going to have their own problems…”

The situations are different. I can only say so much to avoid spoilers, but in Avengers Academy, what has happened is that various X-kids from Utopia end up in the custody of the Avengers, and it’s decided the best thing to do with them to keep them out of the conflict is to house them at Avengers Academy. It’s not an internment camp per se (the cover of Avengers Academy #29 is more symbolic of how the X-kids feel), it’s more like Child Protective Services, where kids who have nowhere else to go are placed — presumably for their own good.

X-Men Legacy #264

I’m not saying it’s right — there’s a lot of debate about that in the book itself — but it’s with good intentions. As for the situation in  X-Men Legacy, events there are more reaction to the larger conflict — the Avengers send a team to keep an eye on the X-Men and make sure they don’t escalate matters by joining the Utopia crew, but they are more watching from outside, like cops at a Mafia wedding. Oh, and don’t assume it was Cap who made the decision in all these cases!”

I’ve enjoyed Gage taking the reigns of X-Men Legacy especially the brewing passion between Gambit and Frenzy. I hope this book survives the reboot that’s surely coming after AVX.

Archie Comics Tackles Breast Cancer

courtesy Archie Comics

Comic books have always been escapism while reflecting issues in our world. Archie Comics has pushed boundaries with groundbreaking stories about gay marriage with new character Kevin Keller. Now the publisher will present a story about breast cancer starring a character familiar to Riverdale fans.

Cheryl Blossom left the Archie gang for Hollywood. Cheryl will be diagnosed with breast cancer and come home to Riverdale.

“One of the things that comes out is that she feels she’s very fortunate that she can have all this treatment because she has medical insurance, the money, to be able to do it,” Editor in Chief Victor Gorelick tells the AP.

The story “opens the door that there are a lot of people who cannot afford this kind of treatment and we have to see where that’s kind of going to lead.”

New Bond Girl Naomie Harris is sharing her excitement for the role and how she sees her character.

“I never thought it was a possibility, so it’s hugely exciting to be a Bond girl. I’m loving it. I love Sam Mendes. He’s a fantastic director. And Daniel Craig is incredible to work with, so I feel incredibly lucky.”

Harris plays a MI6 field agent named Eve and tells ContactMusic about how she sees her role and the training to play a female spy.

“My character would like to see herself as a female bond but I don’t think anyone’s really a match for Bond.”

“I kickbox and do a lot with guns. I started off terrified by the sound of a gun let alone having any idea how to hold one but now I really enjoy it.

Harris, presented at the First Light Awards 2012. First Light provides funding and expertise to enable five to 25 year olds to make their own short digital films and media projects. I’m sure the awards and this actress providing encouragement the next generation of British filmmakers. The film’s director Sam Mendes was a judge for the competition.

Thanks to MI6 and Contact Music for the stories.

I’ve loved Naomie Harris since 28 Days Later. If she can handle a gun the way she worked that machete then looked out bad guys in Skyfall!

Taylor Kitsch Geeks Out For…

Disney’s John Carter takes us to Mars this week. Fans of Edgar Rice Burroughs sci-fi pulp adventures get to geek out but star Taylor Kitsch geeked out for a different reason – the chance to audition for director Andrew Stanton.

“I got a call that said, ‘Hey, would you go down to Disney to meet with Andrew Stanton?’” Kitsch tells Spinoff Online. “I was like, ‘Oh, God, yeah! I loved Wall-E and I’m a huge fan of his!’”

“You know when those opportunities come around they’re rare and you have to fight for them,” Kitsch continued. “Well, I threw my hat in the ring as soon as I could!”

Kitsch says he created his portrayal based on John Carter’s past as a Civil War officer and his research of that time period.

“[John Carter] fought more for the protection of his family and lost that fight,” Kitsch added. “That’s what I stick to, that guilt that he left ironically to fight and protect his family but leaving them vulnerable to be attacked. […] I certainly didn’t play him as a hero. He’s just this everyday guy who is in this extraordinary circumstance.”

Friday Night Lights fans will be interested to hear Kitsch talk about his role as Tim Riggins and his choice of film roles..

“I had the best of both worlds, garnering that critical acclaim as a show and as Riggs, and we’re not so overexposed that I have more of an uphill battle to prove that I’m this guy,” he said. “I pick the roles that are going to make me better … It really boils down to character.”

For more of Kitsch interview here’s the Spinoff Online link. Disney’s John Carter opens this Friday. From what I’ve seen so far, I think Edgar Rice Burroughs will be smiling or cheering from up above!
