Wolverine’s Choice in AvX

Many of our favorite X-Men and Avengers stories are going into tie-in mode for AvX. At Marvel’s Avengers vs. X-Men panel at C2E2 Jason Aaron talked about the arc in Wolverine & The X-Men” saying he’s focusing on “Logan’s long, dark night of the soul” where he battles with himself over what side to choose.

“Logan makes his choice, but just because he goes that way, it doesn’t mean that everyone else at his school will make the same choice.”

Aaron notes that Iceman and Rogue will play a major role as well. The book will also feature Gladiator who will cross with his son Kid Gladiator in issue #13.

I love Kid Gladiator and his bodyguard Warbird (she’s appearing in Marjorie Liu’s Astonishing X-Men arc.) I’ve always been a huge fan of Gladiator and didn’t know his new Shiar status.

Uncanny X-Force #25 kicks off a new adventure for Wolverine’s covert team. In Final Execution the mutants will once again face the consequences of their actions. Veteran artist Mike McKone joins Rick Remender for the arc. Marvel.com shared preview art and a new interview revealing the new enemies for Logan’s crew.

McKone draws the Omega Clan based on Omega Red and makes Remender’s new concept come alive on the page.

“The main location in the issue is a really fun idea of Rick’s,” he says. “It’s a huge, floating mall, hidden in a cloud, where assassins can be bought and traded. It’s a great example, I think, of why this series has struck such a chord with readers: huge playful ideas, writ on a giant canvas with truly wonderful characterization. I hope I can do it again.”

Omega Red was created by Jim Lee and John Byrne in 1992. The mutant has super strength, healing factor and a power to unleash pheromones that could kill. Red had surgically implanted metal tentacles and was allegedly the KGB’s attempt to create a Russian super soldier like Captain America. The villain became a major Wolverine foe through the 90’s.

Beast Unleashed!

Logan is trying to teach young mutants at the Jean Grey School. In Wolverine and the X-Men #8 the Hellfire Club King gets a crash course in killing courtesy of Professor Sabretooth. The killer’s tutelage of Kade Kilgore is brutal, bloody and leads to a frightening kidnapping. Odd that all this guts, blood and terror still seems fun in a creepy way thanks to Jason Aaron’s script.

It’s pretty bold of Aaron to sideline Logan and let the other cast shine. Beast vs Sabretooth was satisfying and inspires Kilgore to hatch his next scheme to destroy the Jean Grey School and get his revenge on Logan.

Chris Bachalo returns on art and knocks us out especially when Genesis unleashes his power. The Hank/Victor action is stylized and pops out of the page.

Wolverine and the X-Men continues to be my favorite X book because it’s the most fun even when you feel a little disturbed by this issue dark, twisted, violent manipulations and countermoves.

Astonished By Marjorie Liu’s X-Men – Updated

Astonishing X-Men #48 courtesy Marvel

Marjorie Liu makes a powerful first impression with her first issue of Astonishing X-Men this week. The action kicks in with a peak into the near future where Northstar is being stalked by his new teammates. I have a theory about what’s behind the possible betrayal.

The story jumps back to the present where Northstar is settling in to domestic bliss – until a fellow Canadian mutant calls – with boyfriend Kyle. Gambit is entertaining a surprise guest at his home away from the school. I’m thrilled to see this former X-woman back. After an entertaining look into the personal lives of  X-Men the drama explodes literally with the new version of a classic team of villains.

I feel like I’m experiencing a cool slice of life with these mutants in city. Mike Perkins style has a grit that feels right for this X-Men in New York City story. His talent really shines in the facial expressions. It’s amazing to see how much character and relationship development Liu weaves in one issue while still packing action and intrigue.

Update: I must have been so excited to have Northstar back that I missed the fact that Jean Paul is called Jean Claude three times in the issue. Mon Dieu!

Avengers Vs. X-Men Effect on X-Kids at The Jean Grey School

Wolverine and the X-Men #9 courtesy Marvel.com

I’m happy to share that Jason Aaron is staying on Wolverine and the X-Men for a while. The writer made that announcement and answered fan questions on Comic Book Resources X-Position. Aaron is juggling Logan’s adventures in that title, wrapping up his final solo story in Wolverine and is co-writing Avengers Vs. X-Men.

“The kids at the Jean Grey School won’t be allowed to get out and about and get involved in “AvX.” Well, most of them won’t, at least. But that’s not to say they’ll go untouched by the events. “AvX” will have some huge ramifications for at least a couple of our students; whether Quentin is one of them remains to be seen.

Quentin’s connection to the Phoenix will be referenced, but no, it won’t be playing a role in “AvX.” The Phoenix Force obviously has a very long and complicated history, and in order to make “AvX” new-reader friendly, we wanted to distill as much of that down as we could. So we focus in on Hope, and the recent history of the Phoenix. That means someone like Rachel Summers won’t play a big role in the main series, but she most definitely will have her moments in the “Wolverine & the X-Men” tie-ins.”

I love Rachel and think she would be most affected by the return of the Phoenix. This event may even make Rachel and Scott reconcile…if they survive.
